Water Vole Workshop 2

One month old youngster.

The second water vole workshop on Saturday went very well indeed with lots of voles active. It's always a worry that they are going to choose the day of a workshop to be particularly inactive. From now until November (later if mild) the vole numbers are high and all the adult females will either be pregnant or lactating and the young from previous litters becoming active in the breeding female's territory.

The litter of three youngsters by the house, who made their debut on the first workshop, are growing and becoming more independent. We also saw similar aged youngsters right down at the far end of the site. It is good to see that the huge male that covers this area is still around and another large male made an appearance near the house and, although quite nervous, he even ran along the weir.

An adult male, who I assume is the breeding male for the upstream territories, makes a brief but impressive appearance.

  1. Oh, stunning, Terry! How rarely do you get three voles on one shot???

  2. Hi Kate

One of the workshop participants got a shot of all 3 feeding side by side!

The opportunities don't last long as the vole's natural grumpy nature soon kicks in. I went back yesterday to try for more shots of the litter together but they are already becoming intolerant of each other and now fight whenever they get close.

There should be another litter on the way soon.
